Whitman's 2nd version of the first three books
Around 1954, Whitman revised the cover art and switched to picture cover versions, which many collectors refer to as the "Cello" versions (as the covers have a layer of cellophane which is often peeling from the covers).
The cover art is not signed unfortunately, nor are the original paintings.
It is possible they were painted by Helen Sampson, or the illustrator of the interior pictures, Janet Laura Scott.
The style does not appear to be quite the same though as Scott's work on the interior artwork (and probably the
cover artwork of the 1st versions)
The interior illustrations were the same as the 1951 printings (with the exception of the illustrated endpapers, which ended up being replaced with either patterned or blank endpapers), except that a few of the pictures at least in volume #1 were removed from this, and the 1961 printings.
