The 1950 Whitman editions
In the late 1940's, the copyright on the first three Bobbsey Twins titles was not renewed, leading to several companies offering inexpensive reprints of these 3 titles. All these reprints were of lesser quality than Grosset & Dunlap's printings, but Whitman knew how to sell books -- in this case specifically, by giving each volume new, attractive artwork (both inside and out). And for the 1st time, these books each had their own, individual
cover artwork, unlike the other two publishers (Goldsmith and Sallfield).
Whitman even updated each book's cover artwork two additional times
after the initial trio of volumes were released: 1st in 1954, and then again in 1961! The internal artwork by Janet Laura Scott remained unchanged through all 3 format changes.
In 1950, Whitman released the 1st three books with dust jackets. The cover artwork
is probably also by Janet Laura Scott, despite it not being signed.

Whitman's 1950-1961 artwork Although the cover paintings for these 1950 releases were not sold by Golden Books
back between 2009 thru ~2014 when the other Bobbsey Twins cover artwork by Whitman was sold, the interior artwork (including the endpaper artwork) for #1 (Merry Days Indoors and Out) was sold. The remaining interior artwork for At the Seashore and In the Country did not come up for auction, though. Some of this interior artwork can be see on the following page of the Whitman artwork. |
